Nicolas Mouzet Tagawa
Nicolas Mouzet Tagawa is a stage director, scenographer, and teacher. Before entering the world of theatre, he worked as a social worker with autistic or so-called 'maladjusted' children in the northern suburbs of Marseille. It was through this experience, searching for alternative ways of communication in instances where speech falls short, that he created his first performative devices. Since his training at INSAS, Tagawa has developed an original process for writing for the stage, with the starting point being the space. His approach is both visual and intuitive - he collects materials, arranges and adjusts them to create lines, frames, and constraints that reveal new expressions of life and movement. What emerges is a new kind of play: a 'game machine' where collaborators are invited to explore and partake. His performances are created from the collision between scenographic concepts and the individuals who inhabit them. Since 2014, he has been crafting hybrid works by interweaving theatre history and its aesthetic rules with readings and reflections on framework, norms and margins that find themselves enriched through his involvement in Brussels' community organisations. In 2024, alongside his closest collaborators, he co-founded Proche Quartier; a theatre company that unites his different disciplines and practices, and strives to enhance reflective thinking and aligned approaches. A few of his previous projects include Bienvenue/Welkom in Anderlecht, Le Site, Chambarde and Strette. Nicolas Mouzet Tagawa also teaches scenography at La Cambre - École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels.
