Insects communicate by tapping their tiny legs against the leaf they rest on, sending micro-vibrations across neighbouring leaves, where other insects may sense them. This fascinating form of animal communication is gradually disappearing due to air and noise pollution. In Ònfalo, musicians Enrico Malatesta and Attila Faravelli, together with researcher Juan José López Díez, dive into a normally inaudible realm. Given that traditional contact microphones would dampen these delicate vibrations, they use laser vibrometers to listen to this language of extraordinary rhythmic and musical complexity. Over several days, they will lead groups equipped with lasers and headphones on walks through green spaces in the city. By pointing lasers at plants, like a zoom lens, participants may experience a sense of wonder upon hearing these previously unheard communications. A concert-conference at the Festival Centre will blend scientific insights with a sound session crafted from the recordings gathered during these explorations. Ònfalo exists at the intersection of sound research, technology, and ecological reflection. It is a remarkable journey into the rich yet invisible life surrounding us and a reminder that we are not the only ones who inhabit urban spaces.
